Mrs. Velma Jean Lockhart Wimes died February 19, 2005. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 26 at Greater St Mary's Missionary Baptist Church in Wichita, KS. She was born February 16, 1947 in Reynolds, Taylor County, GA, daughter of Professor James and Savannah Lockhart. She was the last of sixteen children, with thirteen surviving into adulthood. Her sister, Gertha Lockhart Hicks and brother, Ernest Lockhart preceded her in death. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Garden Valley and later joined Greater St Mary's Baptist Church. She was a 1965 graduate of D F Douglass High School in Montezuma. She earned an undergraduate degree from Fort Valley State University and her masters degree from Wichita State University. On August 16, 1969, she and James Wimes were married. Survivors include her children: Christopher Wimes and Vincent Wimes of Wichita; her mother; daughter in law, Jonna; grandson: Justis; siblings: Allegra Mitchell, Willie C Lockhart, Rosebud Gouch, James Lockhart, Jr., Salome Lockhart, Mary (Len) Ward and Alice (Billy) Williams; sister in law, Sandra Hopkins and Patricia Stokes.
