He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and was emloyed with US Steel in Pennsylvania, PA and with the Russell County Health Department in Phenix City. He was preceded in death by his wives, Mamie Stubb Merritt and Mary Fuller Merritt; 3 brothers, Wilbert Merritt, Calvin Merritt and William Merritt and a sister, Edna Henriguis. He taught at Carver High School in Harris County from 1964 until 1968 and from 1969 until 1972 at Columbus Technical College. He worked as an automobile broker, insurance and investments salesman and opened his own business, Southwestern Fence Company until June 2005. A daughter, Benita Norin Miles, three brothers, Jessie Curry Sr, Felton Miles Sr and John Miles Sr and three sisters, Margie Miles, mary Jordan and Fannie Miles preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Byrd Miles; a daughter, Angel Maria Juliette Miles, both of Columbus; a brother, Eugene Miles Sr of Brooklyn, NY; two sisters, Joanne Benning and Evelyn (Leonard) Rush of Ozark, AL; mother in law, Hazel Byrd of Columbus.
